Asian Food Friday Video: Making Nigiri-Zushi Sushi

When I was a kid I hated fish. Unaware that it truly came from the sea, I ate popcorn shrimp by Kentucky-sized bucket full. But fish? No way. It was all… soft and icky and… well, fishy.
Ick.
You know, I think you realize you’re truly an adult when you start to like peppers and onions on your pizza and become capable of eating fish willingly– and even with pleasure. And even though I don’t want to be a grown up, I can’t help but love sushi. And what’s more grown up than *gasp* raw fish!
Okay. Enough of this half-mournful (but fully self-centered) celebration of my adulthood. Onto the actual sushi. If you’ve never tried making sushi at home, you’d be surprised at how easy it is. Once you get the rice done right, it’s pretty easy to assemble– especially ultra-simple Nigiri-Zushi, a sushi which doesn’t require you to use nori (or have any real assembly experience). The video below is just over two minutes, and gives you a darned good idea of how easy it is to make nigiri sushi.
To this day, the little girl version of Karen that lives in my head (where she sits popping mouthfuls of fried shrimp) is shocked and appalled that I would each sushi. She yells “Gross, Karen!” to me pretty often, actually. But I don’t hear her– I’m too busy enjoying my stay in sushi heaven.
