How to Make a Vodka Watermelon

Since I’ve been writing a lot about watermelon the last week or so, I thought I’d finish off my “watermelon series” (so to speak) by talking about one of my favorite watermelon “recipes” in the universe: the vodka-infused watermelon.

If you’re having a picnic or bbq this summer (and there will be mostly adults present, of course!) a vodka watermelon is almost a necessary part of the celebration. When you break out one of these at a party, believe me… your friends and family will go nuts for it. Vodka-infused watermelon is delicious, fun to eat, and deceptively strong. Goes well with a few fun drinking games, too!

Having a party or picnic sometime soon and want to try this out? All you need is a few days to let the vodka drain into the watermelon, and you’re ready! It’s actually ultra easy to do. Just follow the instructions below, or take a look at the video (at the bottom of this post!) to see how it’s done.

Ingredients:

To make a vodka watermelon, all you need is…

a bottle of vodka, and
a large watermelon

Instructions:

1. Using the cap from your bottle of vodka, mark a place for a hole in the top of the melon. The hole needs to be about the diameter of the neck of the vodka bottle.

2. Cut out the hole with a sharp knife. Reserve the plug of watermelon that you remove. You’ll want to re-insert this after the vodka has absorbed. It helps with transporting the melon without making a mess.

3. With a spoon, dig out some of the melon, making the hole deep enough for most of the neck of the vodka bottle.

4. If you have time, leave the melon to drain (hole-down, of course) over a large bowl or tray in the refrigerator for anywhere fro 8 to 24 hours. This will get rid of some of the water in your melon, allowing it to absorb more vodka. It’s optional, though!

5. Insert the neck of your open vodka bottle into your melon. Allow it to drain slowly into the melon anywhere from 24 hours to several days. If you drain your melon first, 24 hours should be all you need.

6. Remove the vodka bottle. Re-insert the plug you removed from the melon. Transport the watermelon whole to your picnic or barbeque site, slice and enjoy!

Optional: Try this method with flavored vodkas, too! It’s great with citrus vodka, vanilla vodka, you name it.
